Late penalty kick dooms Wisconsin at Penn State

Badgers drop 1-0 contest at Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – On a 1-0-1 stretch of play entering Saturday's game, the Wisconsin men (1-6-1) played over 86 minutes of scoreless soccer against Big Ten second-place Penn State, but gave up a late goal and dropped a 1-0 decision.

In the 87th minute, a penalty was called in the box and it led to a penalty kick attempt for the Nittany Lions (6-1-0). In his second start for the Badgers, Carter Abbott dove to his left while the Penn State attempt found the back of the net on the opposite end giving them the game clinching score.

Shortly before the PSU penalty kick, Wisconsin's Andrew Akindele got on the end of a Badger throw-in right at the penalty spot in the 85th minute, but blasted a shot off the cross bar.

The contest remained tight over the course of the first 45 minutes of play. Wisconsin outshot Penn State over the time period, 7-5.

The Nittany Lions gained control of the game in the second half outshooting the Badgers 13-4. Penn State finished with eight shots on goal and Abbott was able to snag seven saves, including a second penalty kick in the 90th minute by Penn State.

Next up for Wisconsin is a matchup at Michigan State (2-6-0) on Wednesday at 1 p.m. CT.
