Wisconsin drops doubleheader at Northwestern

UW falls 15-7 and 4-0 to first-place Wildcats on Saturday

EVANSTON, Illinois – The Wisconsin softball team dropped both games of its doubleheader on Saturday against Northwestern, falling 15-7 in game one before suffering a 4-0 setback in game two to the first-place Wildcats.

Game One
The Badgers (4-11) got on the board in the first inning as Megan Donahue scored off a Fiona Girardot single to give UW an early 1-0 lead over Northwestern (14-1).

The Badgers extended their lead to 3-0 in the top of the second. After a Lauren Foster hit a single Alyssa McClelland sent her home with a triple to right field before scoring herself after a Peyton Bannon double.

Northwestern scored five runs in the bottom of the second, but the Badgers responded with four runs of their own.

UW loaded the bases in the top of the third and Christaana Angelopulos hit a grand slam to give the Badgers a 7-5 lead.

The Wildcats added eight in the bottom of the third to take a 13-7 lead they would not relinquish.

Northwestern added a run in the bottom of the fifth and another in the sixth to take the 15-7 victory.

Game Two
After a quiet couple of innings, Northwestern struck first thanks to a solo home run by Morgan Newport in the bottom of the fourth to take a 1-0 lead.

The Wildcats added three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 4-0 advantage.

Maddie Schwartz pitched six innings for UW, giving up four runs on six hits.
 
Batting Cleanup
- Angelopulos hit UW's first grand slam of the season and the program's first since Feb. 29, 2020.
- Wisconsin's 10 hits in Game One were the second most the team has had this year.
- McClelland earned her first hit and RBI as a Badger on Saturday.
- Fiona Girardot had a team-high three hits on the day.
