MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up competition in the Husker Big Ten Invitational with some strong performances Saturday at the event in Prairie View, Texas.
Big marks lead women to big finishes
Josie Schaefer won the shot put with a personal-best throw of 58 feet, 8 1/2 inches — a mark that ranks her No. 2 all-time at Wisconsin and stands sixth nationally this season — and came a day after she took second in the discus with another personal-best effort.
Jordan Hirsbrunner put together a big second day in the heptathlon to claim a runner-up finish with 5,272 points after entering the day in seventh place in the standings. She posted the field's second-best throw in the javelin (127-10) and paced the field in the last of the seven events, the 800 meters (2:17.19).
Hailey Orlowski cleared 12 feet, 11 inches to tie for fifth in the pole vault.
On the track, Kiley Robbins clocked in just .04 seconds shy of her own school record in the 100 meters, taking fifth place in 11.57 seconds. Destiny Huven was fourth in the 100-meter hurdles in 13.64, while Ali Dorn clocked in at 55.47 to take 10th in the 400 meters.
Robbins and Huven then teamed up with Armoni Brown and Taylor Gilling to finish third in the 4x100-meter relay in 45.79, the fourth-fastest time in school history.
Johnson strong in sprints to lead men
Sprinter Lawrence Johnson had a career-best day, logging the fastest times of his career in both in the 100 and 200 meters. He raced to a fourth-place finish in the 100 in 10.40 seconds, the 10th-fastest time in school history and just shy of UW's No. 9 all-time mark — which is held by his father, Lawrence, at 10.37. The younger Johnson also grabbed a seventh-place finish in the 200 with a personal-best time of 21.38.
Also on track, Abdullahi Hassan scored a win in the 800 meters in 1:49.77 and Colin Enz ran a personal-best 47.84 to take seventh in the 400 meters.
