PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Wisconsin softball team completed its first sweep of the 2021 campaign with a 10-2 six-inning triumph on Sunday over Rutgers.
With the victory, the Badgers (12-16) extended their winning streak to five games and have won seven of their last eight games.
Rutgers took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second, its first lead of the weekend, after hitting a two-run home run.
The Badgers bounced back in the top of the third, scoring six runs thanks to a string of six-straight hits.
Abby Herbst hit a bases-loaded single, scoring
Fiona Girardot to cut the Rutgers lead to one. The Badgers took a 3-2 lead thanks to a
Lauren Foster double that plated
Megan Donahue and
Skylar Sirdashney.
Christaana Angelopulos hit a three-run home run, her second of the weekend, to cap off the scoring in the inning.
UW added three more runs to its lead in the top of the fourth inning as Donahue hit a two-run home run before Foster had an RBI single to lift UW to 9-2 advantage.
The Badgers tacked on their 10th run in the top of the sixth inning as
Abby Herbst hit a hard ball into center field that scored Sirdashney.
A trio of Badgers saw action in the circle for UW as
Tessa Magnanimo started the game before giving way to
Ava Justman, who picked up the win with two strikeouts. Herbst pitched the final three innings, allowing just one hit while picking up two strikeouts.
Batting Cleanup
- UW enjoyed a season-high 13 hits during its series finale with Rutgers.
- UW also tied a season-high with 10 runs on Sunday.
- Wisconsin outscored Rutgers 32-3 over the four-game series.
- Â The Badgers are on a five-game winning streak, their longest Big Ten Conference winning streak since winning six-straight league games March 29-April 7 against Iowa and Penn State.
