Badgers have a successful first day of B1G Florida Invitational

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Badgers competed in the first day of the B1G Florida Invitational on Friday, their first outdoor meet since 2019.

Five Badgers placed in the top three in their respective events, including one event champion as well as five more placed in the top 10. Three Badgers competed in the preliminary round of their respective event and will move on to Saturday's finals.


Podium Places

Redshirt senior Alissa Niggemann brought home gold for the Badgers in the women's steeplechase, finishing in 10 minutes, 25.11 seconds, nearly 10 seconds faster than the second-place finisher. Peyton Sippy placed fourth in her first-ever steeplechase, crossing the line in 11:02.28. Erinn Hill also competed in her first steeplechase for the Badgers, crossing the line in 11:34.55.

Peyton Frankenreider secured silver in the men's long jump, clearing 23 feet, 10 1/4 inches. Frankenreider was only two inches behind Nebraska's Papay Glaywuluwho, who won with a jump of 24-0 1/4.

Freshman Aabdullahi Hassan snagged silver in the invitational  men's 800-meter run, crossing the line in 1:49.52. Hassan was less than two-tenths behind Iowa's Tysen VanDraska, who crossed the line in 1:49.36.

The Badgers picked up two silver medals in the hammer throw. Olivia Roberts placed second for the women at 179-11, coming right behind Minnesota's Erin Dunning who threw 180-5. Roberts' throw ranks her ninth on the UW all-time list. For the men, Cole Hooper took second with a heave of 190-3, which ranks sixth on the Badger record list. Dan Ufearo finished fifth for UW at 177-2.

Madison Mooney brought home bronze in the invitational women's 1500 meters, speeding past the line in 4:19.98. Mooney crushed her previous record of 4:27.92, which she ran in 2019. Anna Schoesser also competed in the 1500-meters, placing eighth in a time of 4:29.83.


Three Badgers advance

Freshman Destiny Huven placed third in the 100-meter hurdle preliminary round, crossing the line in 13.63 to advance the final. Huven's time lands her the No.5 spot on Wisconsin's all-time outdoor performance list in her first-ever time running the outdoor hurdles. The Milwaukee native will compete in the finals tomorrow at 3:20 p.m. CT.

Freshman Kiley Robbins placed fifth in the 100-meter dash preliminary round, speeding past the line in 11.70, which was good to advance her to the final tomorrow. Robbins' time earned her the No.7 spot on Wisconsin's all-time outdoor performance list, tied with Renee Jones' time from 1984. Robbins will compete in the finals Saturday at 4 p.m. CT.

Lawrence Johnson competed in the 100-meter dash preliminary round, crossing the line in 10.60 to place eighth and continue on to finals. Johnson will compete in the final tomorrow at 4:05 p.m. CT.

Top-10 finishes

In the field events, Josie Schaefer placed fifth in the women's invitational shot put with an outdoor best throw of 56-5 1/4, which ranks third on the UW all-time list. Armoni Brown placed sixth in the women's long jump with a leap of 19-2 and Chloe Lindeman took seventh in the women's shot put with a throw of 48-0 1/2.

On the track, Ali Dorn placed sixth in the women's 400-meter dash invite, crossing the line in 56.30.

The Badgers wrap up the B1G Florida Invitational on Saturday. Field events begin at 11 a.m. CT with the men and women's pole vault. Running events begin at 2:30 p.m. CT starting with the women's 4x100-meter relay.
