Badgers shine on first day of Fighting Illini Big Ten Relays

Schaefer, Mooney bring home gold

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Badger men's and women's track and field teams completed day one of Fighting Illini Big Ten Relays on Friday. The women shined with two athletes bringing home gold in their respective events and an additional three making the podium. 

Badgers bring home gold

Madison Mooney, the Big Ten indoor runner-up in the 800-meter run, brought home gold in the same event on Friday. Mooney crossed the line in 2 minutes, 5.86 seconds. Her time was a person best, ranking her eighth on Wisconsin's all-time outdoor performance list. It is also the fourth-fastest time in the Big Ten this season

Josie Schaefer took gold in the invitational discus throw, throwing a personal record mark of 181 feet, 10 inches. This bumps her up to No.3 all-time at Wisconsin and No. 5 in the Big Ten this season. Schaefer beat her previous record that she set just last week by nearly five feet.

Podium finishes

Five women distance runners placed in the top 10 in the 5,000-meter run. Alexa Westley and Lucinda Crouch took second and third, respectively. Westley crossed the line in a personal best time of 16:19.97 and Crouch finished in 16:29.09, improving her personal best by nearly 20 seconds. Sarah Shulze took seventh in 16:42.41 while Alissa Niggemann took eighth in 16:43.36. Vivian Hacker rounded out the top 10, improving her personal best time by over 30 seconds in 16:44.62.

Destiny Huven continues to shine in the 100-meter hurdles, bringing home bronze this weeek, speeding past the line in 13.67.

For the Badger men, Andrew Stone secured silver in the invitational men's shot put with a personal best throw of 61-9 3/4. This puts Stone at No.7 on Wisconsin's all-time outdoor performance list and ranks him fifth in the Big Ten this year.

Additional events

Peyton Sippy brought home a fourth-place finish in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, crossing the line in a personal best time of 10:56.94. On the men's side, David Vannucchi and Kavanaugh FitzPatrick finished fourth and sixth, respectively. Vannucchi crossed the line in 9:23.49 with Kavanaugh coming in at 9:29.07.

Victoria Heiligenthal and Jack Meijer both took fourth in their respective 1,500-meter runs. Heiligenthal crossed the line in 4:31.09 and Meijer sped past in 3:48.37, both personal best times

Peyton Frankenreider brought home a fifth-place finish in the invitational men's long jump with a leap of 23-6 1/4.

Bianca Stubler took fifth in the women's 400-meter hurdles, crossing the line in a personal best time of 59.47. Her time ranks her eighth on the UW outdoor performance list. Teammate Morgan Parzych competed in the 400-meter run, crossing the line in 57.17 to bring home an eighth-place finish.

Chloe Lindeman and Olivia Roberts took seventh and eighth, respectively, in the women's hammer throw. Lindeman had a thow of 176-2 with Roberts following at 172-4.

Hailey Orlowski finished eighth in the women's pole vault with a clearance of 12-4.

Taylor Gilling brought home ninth in the women's 200-meter dash, crossing the line in 24.48.

Up Next

The Badgers compete in day two of the Fighting Illini Big Ten Relays on Saturday. Field events begin at 9 a.m. with the men's hammer throw. Field events will begin at 12:30 p.m. with the women's 10k.
