Caufield becomes second Hobey winner in school history
MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin sophomore forward Cole Caufield has officially claimed college men's hockey's top individual award, the Hobey Baker Memorial Award committee announced on Friday.Â
The selection probably isn't a surprise to many, given Caufield's performance over the 2020-21 season. His 30 goals and 52 points led the nation and helped the Badgers win the Big Ten regular-season championship and reach their first national tournament in seven years. The Stevens Point native also led in points per game (1.67), goals per game (0.968), and power-play goals (11).
Caufield, a Montreal Canadians first round draft pick, received Big Ten Player of the Year honors this season and went on an impressive 12-game point streak (13 goals, 12 assists) from Dec. 3 to Feb. 6. He displayed his skills on the international stage back in January when he helped Team USA win gold at the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship. Caufield was an integral part of helping the Badgers achieve a 20-10-1 record, their best since 2014.Â
Despite 14 top-10 finalists, Caufield is only the second Badger to win the Hobey Baker in school history. Former Badger Blake Geoffrion became the first in 2010. Dylan Holloway also cracked the top-10 finalists list this season.
Following his accomplished season, Caulfield signed an entry level contract with the Montreal Canadians and will join their AHL affiliate Rocket de Laval. He is set to make his professional debut on Friday.
