Girardot earns second-team accolades while Bannon is named to the freshman squad
MADISON, Wis. – A pair of Wisconsin softball players earned Big Ten Conference year-end honors on Wednesday as Fiona Girardot earned second-team All-Big Ten honors while Peyton Bannon collected freshman All-Big Ten accolades.
The Badgers' steady second baseman, Girardot hit a team-best .324 during the 2021 campaign and led the Badgers in hits (34), walks (22) and on-base percentage (.462) while she was tied for the team lead with 12 doubles. The sophomore from River Forest, Illinois, also had 10 multi-hit games in 38 starts for the Cardinal and White.
Bannon, who split her time between shortstop and the outfield for UW during her rookie campaign, ranked second on the team in batting average with a .291 average. She had a team-best 27 runs and her 59 total bases during the season also paced the Badgers. The Spring Grove, Illinois, native also ranked second on the team in stolen bases with nine this year.
In addition, junior pitcher Maddie Schwartz was named the Badgers' recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, which is presented to one student-athlete at each institution who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These students also must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
