Second varsity eight advances at NCAA rowing
May 28, 2021 | Women's Rowing
Badgers second boat guaranteed a top-12 finish
SARASOTA, Florida – The No. 15 Wisconsin women's rowing team, racing in its 13th-consecutive NCAA rowing championships, showed it keeps getting faster on the first day of the 2021 NCAAs on Friday at Nathan Benderson Park.
In the morning heats, UW finished outside the top-two finishers that advanced directly to Saturday A/B semifinals.
All three afternoon repechage performances were worth watching starting with the varsity eight.
UW's top boat battled down the course with Alabama and California. The Crimson Tide held a slight edge at the midpoint, while the Badgers held an edge over California and with Tennessee in contact. By the finish, UW held off the Volunteers to take third and an equipment malfunction cost them their chance at second. They will be in Saturday's C/D semifinals.
The second varsity eight earned UW's one spot in an A/B semifinal on Saturday, coming back with steady advancement from fourth place at 500 meters to grab second place behind Rutgers for the second and final advancing spot in the repechage race. UW rowed past Princeton and Duke to earn its finish.
The varsity four charged hard as well, sitting in sixth place at 500 meters, then picking off Tennessee by 1250 and Navy near the 1500 mark. The Badgers fell just short of third, fractions of a second behind Alabama at the 2000-meter finish line.

"Today was a really great day for Badger rowing. This morning we set out to ideally make the top-two spots, but we really felt the chances of that were not really high so we were setting ourselves up as best we could for the reps and they did a wonderful job of that. The racing was as a step up from Big Tens. They became better racers from Big Tens to this race so that was a good first step.
"In the reps, they brought it. All three boats had spectacular races.
"The varsity eight was in the hunt to make the A/B semi. They were pretty much dead even with Cal, maybe a little bit up with less than 500 meters to go and Alabama was a couple of seats ahead of them. We were going and we had an oarlock pop. Unfortunately that took us out of the top-two spots, but even with that happening we were able to come in third in that race which was phenomenal.
"The 2V, best race of their season. They put it together, did what they had to do, had fun doing it and raced superbly to get to the A/B semi.
"The four, same thing. Least experienced boat of the group and they just raced their hearts out and found something that they've been searching for since they got together as a crew.
"All-in-all a very, very positive day for us. The varsity eight is of course devastated they don't get to represent in the A/B semi, but we are going to continue to do what we've been doing which is to go as fast as we can to prove to ourselves and everyone else that we deserve to be here and we are going to finish as high as we can. Great day. Bittersweet day, but really looking forward to tomorrow and continuing our run."
