Jonathan Davis represents Team USA, wins gold in Latvia
RIGA, Latvia — Jonathan Davis capped off a golden opportunity this week, helping USA Basketball complete its run to winning gold at the FIBA U19 World Cup in Latvia on Sunday.
The USA defeated France, 83-81, in Sunday's final game to clinch gold. Team USA finished a perfect 7-0 in the world tournament, earning wins over Australia, Mali and Turkey in the group stage, followed by wins over Korea, Senegal, then Canada in the knockout round leading up to Sunday's final.
Davis became the first Badger to win a gold medal with USA Basketball since Sam Dekker did so as part of the USA U18 national team in the 2012 FIBA Americas Championship.
Davis' best performance of the tournament for Team USA came against Korea in group phase play. In the win, the sophomore guard from La Crosse, Wisconsin posted 9 points (3-4 FG, 2-2 3FG), 5 assists, 3 rebounds and 2 steals in 17 minutes.
Back-to-back gold medalists at the FIBA U19 World Cup, USA men's teams have won eight gold medals, three silver medals and one bronze medal while compiling a 106-14 overall record in U19 World Cup play since the event launched in 1979. Even more impressive, the USA has won five of the last seven U19 golds since 2009.
