Badgers jump past Kangaroos in season opener

Rice scores twice in the first half to lead UW to a 4-0 triumph

KANSAS CITY – Senior Lauren Rice scored twice in five minutes to kickstart the Wisconsin women's soccer team to a 4-0 win over Kansas City on Thursday night in the season-opening game of the 2021 campaign.

Rice scored goals in the 11th and 16th minute, marking the second time in her Badger career she has enjoyed a multi-goal game.
 

The Noblesville, Indiana, native also picked up an assist on UW's third goal of the opening stanza as her corner kick was headed in by Claire Odmark in the 34th minute to give UW a 3-0 lead after 45 minutes.

Freshman Maddie Ishaug recorded her first collegiate goal early in the second half with a chip shot over the KC keeper that capped off the scoring for Wisconsin.

  • UW's four goals were the most the team has scored since a 6-0 win over Hofstra in the second round of the NCAA tournament in 2018.
  • The Badgers outshot Kansas City 18-1 and had an 8-1 advantage on corner kicks
  • Rice has scored three goals in her last three games for UW. The senior also has six game-winning goals during her Badger career.
  • It marked the second-straight, season-opening game Odmark has scored in as she had the game-winning goal in UW's 2020-21 season opener against Iowa.
