Badgers begin season with a 1-1 draw

Senior defender connects on a second-half free kick for first career goal

MADISON, Wis. – UW men's soccer began their 2021 campaign with a 1-1 draw against SIUE on Thursday night at McClimon Soccer Complex.
 
The Badgers took an early second-half lead off a free kick in the 47th minute. The score came off a connection from Andrew Akindele to Moritz Kappelsberger. The strike marks Kappelberger's first career goal for Wisconsin.
 
UW limited the Cougars to seven shots on goal with Carter Abbott registering saves on the first six attempts. In the 89th minute, SIUE's Max Broughton equalized the contest at one apiece.
 
In the overtime periods, the Badgers attempted two shots, but were unable to connect to clinch the victory.
 
Wisconsin will be back at McClimon Soccer Complex on Sunday at 7 p.m. when they take on Green Bay. Admission is free.
