Thoughts from Coach Wilson, B1G honorees and more
MADISON, Wis.— Wisconsin Golf is set to kick off its season with the Marquette Intercollegiate on September 5-7 at Erin Hills.
The team then takes a three week break from competition before hosting the Badger Invitational at University Ridge on September 26-28. The fall season then closes with the Rich Harvest Farms Intercollegiate on October 2-4 and the Steelwood Intercollegiate on October 30-31.
Head coach Mike Wilson will make his competition debut with the Badgers at the Marquette Intercollegiate and has been preparing for the upcoming season with the team.
"I am really excited to watch our guys perform under tournament conditions, we spoke today about giving great effort over every shot," said Wilson. "We have just been holding firm to our message of being elite. Everything you do matters."
Wisconsin also added new assistant coach, Zack Siefert, to the program this year. Siefert is a former head coach for both men's and women's golf at Limestone University.
The Big Ten Conference announced its preseason honorees on Tuesday morning. Badgers Griffin Barela, Cameron Huss and Coalter Smith made the list. These three are the only three returners who competed in all six events with the Badgers last season.
Barela is a senior and one of the Badgers top returners. Averaging 74.53, the Lakewood, Colorado native recorded one top-25 finish, coming in T23 at the Boilermaker Intercollegiate with a three-over-par 219. He earned GCAA All-America Scholar for the second season in a row, an award that honors top performers in both academic performance and performance on the course. This summer he won the Colorado Golf Association's Amateur Championship by five strokes with an eight-under-par 272 over the four rounds.
"I'm definitely looking forward to getting back out and competing in my last season here," said Barela. "The way last year ended left a bad taste in my mouth so I'm excited for the opportunity to go out and improve on the momentum I picked up this summer and build a special team with the new coaching staff."
Huss returns after an impressive freshman campaign. He was the leading scorer last season, averaging 73.80 over all five stroke-play competitions and also competed in the Big Ten Match Play. Huss recorded two top-25 finishes, including finishing eighth at the Hawkeye Invitational after shooting a career-low four-under-par 212. He finished first or tied for first for the Badgers in four of the five events last season. The Kenosha native finished sixth at the Wisconsin State Amateur Championship this summer, playing in the final pairing for the last round.
"We're looking forward to having a fall season again and playing a normal schedule," said Huss. "We're ready to get to work under coach Wilson and coach Siefert and make some noise this fall and carry it into the spring."
Smith is a junior who averaged 75.00 last season and returns looking to keep his numbers low. The Gross Pointe Farms, Michigan native finished tied for second in the Golf Association of Michigan's Championship this summer with a three-under-par 205. During the tournament he shot a course record of 62 (-8) at Franklin Hills Country Club.
Also returning for the Badgers are Jack Blair, Cameron Frazier, Robbie Morway, Chip Savarie and Ryan Smith.
In addition, the Badgers welcome two new faces to the team this fall, Jacob Beckman and Graham Moody.
Beckman is a Madison-area native who comes to Wisconsin after a summer of success on the golf course. Beckman, who was the No. 1 ranked player in Wisconsin, won the 2021 WIAA Boy's Golf Individual Title and competed in the US Junior Amateur at The Country Club of North Carolina. He also finished second in the Wisconsin Junior Amateur Championship this summer.
Moody comes to Wisconsin from Vancouver, Washington. He is a two-time Oregon Junior Golf Player of the Year and the 2018 High School 3A Washington State Champion. Moody has also competed in a US Junior Am as the fifth-youngest in the field of the 2018 tournament at Baltusrol. In 2019 he finished 57th out of 220 at the IMG Academy Junior World Championship.
"I think our fan base will be encouraged at how our guys will carry themselves and the effort that they will give," said head coach Wilson. "I do not think this is a rebuild as Coach Burcin left us a solid group of returning players."
