Wisconsin powers past Eastern Michigan, 34-7

Mellusi, Berger and Guerendo provide firepower for Badgers' run game

MADISON, Wis. — Chez Mellusi ran for 144 yards and a touchdown, leading No. 18 Wisconsin to a 34-7 victory over Eastern Michigan on Saturday night.

Wisconsin (1-1, 0-1 Big Ten) piled up 352 rushing yards and also dominated on defense against Eastern Michigan (0-2), which had 92 total yards on offense. The Eagles had three first downs.

Mellusi, a Clemson transfer, became the first Wisconsin running back to record consecutive 100-yard rushing games in his first two contests since Corey Clement in 2013.

The Badgers, typically known for their explosive running, also had breakout performances from Isaac Guerendo and Jalen Berger. Berger, who missed the opener, had 15 carries for 62 yards and one TD. Wisconsin rushed for 275 yards in the first half.

Guerendo got to the edge and ran 82 yards for his first career touchdown that increased Wisconsin's lead to 24-0 with 4:40 left in the first half. Guerendo, a junior, posted the eighth-longest TD run in program history. Junior running back Brady Schipper set a pair of career high marks with eight carries for 29 yards, while freshman running back Braelon Allen collected seven carries for 30 yards, including his first career TD.

The Badgers excelled on defense. UW held the Eagles to 16 yards rushing, 92 total yards and three first downs. The Badgers limited Eastern Michigan to 23 total yards in the first half, its fewest yards allowed before halftime since 2017.

Senior defensive end Matt Henningsen recorded the sixth sack of his career — and first since the 2019 Big Ten Championship Game — dropping Eagles QB Ben Bryant for a 10-yard loss in the second quarter. Torchio made the second start of his career, matching a career high with three tackles.  Junior cornerback Donte Burton recorded his first career interception, picking off Preston Hutchinson in the fourth quarter.

Senior kicker Collin Larsh went 2-for-2 on field goals, connecting from 33 and 39 yards. He is now 3-for-4 on the season, while teammate and punter Andy Vujnovich had two punts for 111 yards, good for a 55.5 average, including a career-long 61 yarder.

The lone highlight for Eastern Michigan was a 98-yard interception return for a TD in the fourth quarter by freshman defensive back David Carter, who picked off Badgers reserve quarterback Chase Wolf. The score was a career first for Carter. Mertz returned in the fourth after Wolf's interception.

Eastern Michigan's Hutchinson and senior Ben Bryant split time at QB against Wisconsin. The pair combined for 76 passing yards. Hutchinson had three rushes for 16 yards.

Badgers receivers saw some action Saturday. Kendric Pryor led receivers with 54 yards, while Davis had 30. Senior tight end Jake Ferguson had three catches for 17 yards. Quarterback Graham Mertz completed 14 of 17 passes for 142 yards and no interceptions in three-plus quarters.

Berger received his first snaps of the season Saturday. Berger, a redshirt freshman didn't play in Wisconsin's season-opening loss to Penn State.

Berger, a preseason Doak Walker candidate, rushed for a team-high 301 yards in four games last season.

Wisconsin has a bye next week, before a much-anticipated matchup against No. 8 Notre Dame on Sept. 25 at Soldier Field in Chicago.
