Former Badger to come on as volunteer assistant coach
MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin softball head coach Yvette Healy announced that former Wisconsin infielder Stephanie Lombardo will be joining the coaching staff as a volunteer assistant coach this upcoming year.
"We are thrilled to welcome Wisconsin Softball alumni Stephanie Lombardo to the coaching staff," Healy said. "A home-grown, state of Wisconsin product, Steph has been a part of some of the most memorable wins in Badger Softball history, with epic walk-off home runs against Michigan and Oklahoma. Her class helped lead Wisconsin to back-to-back-to-back NCAA appearances for the first time in program history in 2017, 2018, and 2019. "
Lombardo graduated from UW in 2020 with a degree in Economics as well as Retail and Consumer Behavior. She spent the 2021 softball season as a Graduate Assistant Coach at Eastern Kentucky University.
A part of the EKU coaching staff, Lombardo assisted in the Colonels' 35-17 overall season where the team went 22-9 in the Ohio Valley Conference, winning the conference tournament in May. Eastern Kentucky earned a spot in the 2021 NCAA Tournament and competed in the Knoxville regional, falling to both Tennessee and Liberty University.
As a player, Lombardo has post-season experience of her own, traveling to three NCAA Tournaments with Wisconsin. One of her biggest moments came against Notre Dame in the 2019 NCAA Regional Elimination game. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning and the Badgers on the verge of elimination, Lombardo sent a three-run home run over the fence to walk-off the game and advance the Badgers in the tournament. Wisconsin went on to beat the No. 1 overall seeded Oklahoma Sooners the next day in the tournament.
Lombardo originally hails from New Berlin, Wisconsin and as hometown favorite, will look to bring player experience and a winning mentality to Goodman Diamond this spring.
