Badgers earn first victory over Golden Gophers since 2010-11 season

MINNEAPOLIS — No. 10 Wisconsin earned a historic victory on Sunday thanks to a 21-15 win on the road at No. 14 Minnesota.

The Badgers improve to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the Big Ten with their defeat of the Golden Gophers at Maturi Pavilion, a feat not seen since the 2010-11 season when UW beat UM 19-17. The win also marks head coach Chris Bono and his staff's first win against Minnesota.

The Badgers took six of 10 matches against the Gophers, including two significant upsets. Ranked 13th in the nation by Intermat, Eric Barnett opened up the Big Ten dual with a 8-5 decision and upset victory over No. 8 Patrick McKee to give the Badgers a 3-0 lead. More impressive, No. 33 Garrett Model roared to a 10-5 decision upset of No. 4 Brayton Lee at 157 pounds. Scoreless after the first period, Model scored a flurry of takedowns to quiet the home crowd and earn the notable victory to give the Badgers a 12-3 lead heading in to the intermission.

Coming out of the locker room after the break, true freshman Dean Hamiti held nothing back as he scored a takedown and then pinned Minnesota's Cael Carlson in 1:11. Hamiti's fall added six points to the Badgers' team score to make it 18-3 with four matches left. Hamiti is now 14-0 in his first season as a Badger with six dual victories.

At 133 pounds, Kyle Burwick earned a gritty 6-4 decision over the Gophers' Jake Gliva, while teammate Braxton Amos clinched the Badgers dual-match victory with a 6-4 decision over Michial Foy at 197 pounds. Amos' victory put the Badgers ahead by 10 points, 21-11, ensuring that team victory before the final bout at heavyweight between No. 8 Trent Hillger and No. 1 Gable Steveson, a 2021 Olympic gold medalist.
