Bantle nets Badgers' lone goal
MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin men's hockey (8-16-3, 5-11-1 1-1-0) fell to No. 4 Michigan in a Friday night matchup at the Kohl Center.
Michigan (20-7-1, 11-6-0 0-3-0) drew first blood when Dylan Duke slotted a rebound into the net off of a shot from Ethan Edwards. Mackie Samoskevich setup Edwards with a one-timer from the point that bounced off the post and landed in the blue paint behind goaltender Jared Moe for Duke to tap in.
The Wolverines built on their lead with a power-play goal from Thomas Bordeleau in the final seconds of the first period. Samoskevich sent a pass to Bordeleau along the boards. He passed to Matty Beniers below the goal line who sent it right back to Bordeleau for a shot. UW's Jack Gorniak got his stick on Brodeleau's stick to break up the shot attempt, but the puck deflected off a Bagder defenseman and into the net for a 2-0 lead.
The Badgers got one back on the power play to start the second period, courtesy of Carson Bantle. Fifth-year transfer forward Max Johnson started the play at the far blue line where he set up Sam Stange for a rush into Michigan's zone. Stange threaded a pass to Bantle across the zone who skated around the net and tucked the puck past goaltender Erik Portillo to get UW on the board, 2-1.
Luke Morgan restored Michigan's two-goal lead at 5:04 in the second period. Michael Pastujov passed to Matty Beniers as he made his way into Wisconsin's zone and Morgan crashed the net to stuff home the rebound.
Michigan then went up 4-1 when Samoskevich fired a wrist shot top-shelf from the slot, assisted by John Beecher and Edwards.
Beniers netted the lone goal of the third period to win it for the Wolverines, 5-1. Nick Blankenburg's centering pass was redirected by the 2022 U.S. Olympian for the game's final score.
Michigan outshot Wisconsin 37-27. Jared Moe had 14 saves in net and Rowe had 18.
