Peltonen, Mersch find the back of the net
MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin men's hockey (8-17-3, 5-12-1 1-1-0 Big Ten) lost to No. 4 Michigan (21-7-1, 12-6-0) in its final meeting of the season with the Wolverines at the Kohl Center on Saturday.
Michigan's Ethan Edwards opened up the scoring at 4:50 in the first period with an unassisted goal. He claimed a loose puck on the Badgers' blue line and made his way through the zone until he had a clear lane to pick the top corner for a 1-0 lead.
Jesper Peltonen tied things up for the Badgers just 1:22 into the second period. Roman Ahcan fed the puck back to the Finnish defenseman on the point for him to hammer into the net and even the score, 1-1.
The Badgers then took a 2-1 lead just over a minute later when Dominick Mersch rushed the puck and sent a laser past Michigan's Erik Portillo.
The Wolverines were quick to respond with a goal at 3:55 in the second period from Philippe LaPointe. Michael Pastujov won a battle for the puck in the corner and fed LaPointe for a shot on the edge of the crease. Keaton Pehrson recorded a secondary assist on the play to tie the score, 2-2.
Jimmy Lambert gave Michigan the lead when he scored at 8:18 of the second. He connected with Nolan Moyle and Garrett Van Wyhe on a rush through the neutral zone and sent a shot top shelf.
Michigan then took a two-goal lead minutes later after Brendan Brission let off a wrist shot in the slot, assisted by Thomas Bordeleau.
The Badgers headed into the third period faced with a 4-2 deficit.
Michigan added to their tally at 11:16 in the final period. Dylan Duke passed up the boards up to Mackie Samoskevich who led the entry into the Badgers zone. He found Luke Hughes unmanned in the slot for a wrist shot.
Nick Blankenburg scored on the power play in the final minute of the game, assisted by Mark Estapa and Matty Beniers to make the final score 6-2 in Michigan's favor.
The Badgers out-shot Michigan 40-37. Goaltender Cameron Rowe made 31 saves in net.
