First B1G Match Play tournament for women’s program
MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin will be competing in the inaugural Big Ten Match Play event Jan. 31- Feb. 1 at Innisbrook Golf Resort in Palm Harbor, Florida.
Here are five things to know before the team tees it up for the first time this spring season:
1. Fall Rewind: During the Fall 2021 season, the Badgers averaged 295.50 strokes over four tournaments. The team's best finish was fourth at their home tournament, the Badger Invitational. Wisconsin's lowest score was an 877 at the Cougar Classic, the first tournament of the 2021-22 season. Junior Emily Lauterbach had the team's lowest individual average at 74.00 over 12 rounds. Freshman Vanessa Ho averaged 74.25 and senior Mackenzie Hahn averaged 74.42, also both through 12 rounds.
2. The Tournament: The Big Ten Match Play is hosted by Ohio State and features three days of match play format. This is the first year that the Big Ten is hosting a match play tournament for women's programs. Wisconsin and Michigan took turns hosting the East-West Match Play Challenge from 2014 to 2019. The 2019 event at University Ridge was the last time Wisconsin competed in a match play tournament. The first round will begin at 7:15 a.m. CST followed by the second round at 1:45 p.m. The final round will start Tuesday morning at 7:15 a.m. All rounds will be shotgun format.
3. The Course: Innisbrook Golf Resort is home to the Copperhead Course which hosts the PGA Tour Valspar Championship each year. There are also three other courses: the Island Course, North Course and South Course. For the tournament, teams will be playing the Island course at 6,344 yards.
4. The Field: Competing in the tournament are Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, Rutgers and Wisconsin. Competing for Wisconsin will be Chloe Chan, Nicole Ciskowski, Mackenzie Hahn, Vanessa Ho, Emily Lauterbach and Tracy Lee. Wisconsin is seeded fifth and will face fourth-seeded Nebraska in the first round.
