Badgers fall to Lakehead in exhibition contest

Lucius, Bantle shine in overtime loss
MADISON— The Wisconsin men's hockey team previewed the upcoming season on Sunday afternoon with an exhibition matchup at the Kohl Center.
In a game to prepare for the regular-season opening next weekend, Wisconsin fell 3-2 in overtime, but showcased new and returning talent in a battle with one of Canada's top university hockey teams.
Lakehead struck first just over two minutes into the first period with an unassisted goal from Geoff Dempster.
Freshman forward and Carolina Hurricanes draft pick Cruz Lucius put the Badgers on the board at the end of the first period. Mike Vorlicky entered the Thunderwolves' zone and passed to Tyson Jugnauth on the wing who fired a shot on net for Lucius to tip in.
The Badgers skated into the second period tied 1-1.
The Thunderwolves took a 2-1 lead halfway through the third period when Josh Van Unen tapped the puck in from the edge of the crease.
With just over two minutes remaining in regulation, Carson Bantle caught a pass from Corson Ceulemans coming into the zone and ripped a shot past Lakehead's goaltender. Brock Caufield recorded a secondary assist on the play.
The Badgers and Thunderwolves skated into overtime tied 2-2.
Lakehead's Oliver Pouliot found the back of the net on the power play with 31 seconds remaining in overtime to win 3-2 for the Thunderwolves.
Wisconsin had 42 shots on net and goaltenders Jared Moe and Kyle McClellan made eight and 13 saves, respectively.
