Five Badgers score in 5-2 win over Bulldogs
DULUTH, Minn. — The Wisconsin Badgers men's hockey overcame an early deficit to defeat No.10 Minnesota Duluth, 5-2, on Friday at Amsoil Arena.
The Bulldogs (2-3-0) scored first with a power-play goal at 10:58 into the first period. Luke Loheit buried a back-hand shot following up his own rebound on the edge of the crease, assisted by Ben Steeves and Carter Loney.
Charlie Stramel tied the game for Wisconsin (1-4-0) two minutes later when he netted his first career goal. Mathieu De St. Phalle led a rush into the UMD zone and rimmed the puck behind the net to Cruz Lucius, who then centered a pass to Stramel to redirect into the net.
Before the first period was over, Cruz Lucius found the back of the net to give the Badgers a 2-1 lead. Senior defenseman Mike Vorlicky broke the puck out to Corson Ceulemans who hit Lucius with a pass skating into the offensive zone. Lucius fired a back-handed shot that sailed over the shoulder of goaltender Zach Skejskal.
The Bulldogs tied the game, 2-2, 23 seconds into the second period with their second power-play tally of the game. Blake Bondi scored on a tip-in on a shot from Isaac Howard, assisted by Derek Dashke.
Jack Gorniak put Wisconsin up 3-2 at 15:02 in the second period when a pair of off-setting penalties caused the Badgers and UMD to play four-on-four. Ceulemans poked the puck away from a UMD forward and sent a stretch pass off the boards to Gorniak who was charging up the ice. Gorniak made a move and buried the puck five-hole, sending the Badgers into the third period with a one-goal lead.
Transfer forward Ty Smilanic added to the Badger's lead on the power play at 5:14 in the third period after a successful coaches' challenge turned a two-minute power play into a five-minute major. Gorniak had the puck on the blueline and passed to freshman forward Ben Dexheimer on the far side. Dexheimer found Smilanic coming down the middle for a tap in goal.
Owen Lindmark added to the tally with an empty-net goal in the final two minutes, assisted by Gorniak.
The Badgers closed out the game for a 5-2 win over No. 10 Minnesota Duluth, their first of the season. Goaltender Jared Moe stood tall in net with 38 saves on the night.
