MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin (3-5, 0-0 B1G) is coming off a three-game tournament at the 2022 U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam, and it returns to the Kohl Center for the first time since Nov. 16. The Badgers will compete against Florida State (7-1, 0-0 ACC) on Thursday, Dec. 1 as part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Tip time is 6:30 p.m. from the Kohl Center and the game can be streamed on BTN+ or listened to on WIBA.
Here are five things to know before the Badgers matchup against the Seminoles:
1. RECAPPING THE PARADISE JAM: The Badgers went 0-3 in the Paradise Jam, but they put up a valiant effort in each game of the tournament. The Badgers lost by eight points to a Georgia team that has received votes to be ranked in the top 25. Against Seton Hall, the lead changed nine times and the score was tied four times before Wisconsin ultimately fell 83-72. In its final game against a physical and experienced VCU roster, Wisconsin played with a short bench due to Avery LaBarbera's ankle injury, but persevered and continued battling until the time ran out.
2. TOURNAMENT RECOGNITION: Maty Wilke landed herself a spot on the Paradise Jam All-Tournament Team after her impressive performance in St. Thomas. The redshirt-freshman averaged 15.7 points per game along with 2.7 3-pointers in 34.0 minutes per game. She was one of the Badgers' top-two scorers in all three games of the tournament and brought her season averages to 14.6 points and 34.0 minutes per contest.
3. ROTATING ROSTER: Wisconsin started off the season with Halle Douglass, Krystyna Ellew and Ronnie Porter being the only players to consistently come off the bench. Since then, the Badgers have started adding new mixes of players into the lineup. Savannah White and Sania Copeland have been seeing a lot of playing time, and against VCU, Wisconsin had six players on the court that are not part of the typical starting lineup.
4. SEASON-BEST PERFORMANCE: Julie Pospisilova, one of the senior leaders for the Badgers, had her best game of the season thus far against VCU on Nov. 26. In her final game of the Paradise Jam, she dropped five 3-pointers and notched 27 points, one shy of her career high. After scoring a total of 15 points in the first two games of the tournament, Pospisilova stepped up her game offensively in the absence of LaBarbera. She was the only senior to play for the Badgers and only one of three upperclassmen to enter the game.
5. SCOUTING THE SEMINOLES: Florida State is a tough ACC opponent that typically finishes in the top half of the conference. Last season, the Seminoles made their first appearance in the Women's NCAA Tournament as a No. 11 seed. The Seminoles finished off 2021-22 with a 17-14 overall record and 10-8 conference record, which tied them for seventh in the ACC. Florida State has begun the 2022-23 season with a 7-1 record, and has had quality wins over Florida and previously undefeated Purdue. The team is led in scoring by Ta'niya Latson, a freshman guard who is averaging 24.4 points per game. The Miami native has had five-straight 20-point performances, and the Badgers will need to focus their defense on keeping her scoring in check.
