EAST LANSING, Mich. — No. 9 Wisconsin sent 11 wrestlers to open the tournament season at the Michigan State University Open. Five Badgers placed in their respective weight classes at the Michigan State Open, led by sophomore Brooks Empey (285 pounds) who placed second, true freshman Gannon Rosenfeld (285) who placed third and true freshman Dylan Coy (133) who placed fourth.
"Overall it was a good first tournament of the year with a lot of great competition," said Wisconsin assistant coach Seth Gross. "The effort and fight was there each match and it was good to figure out what areas we will really need to focus on moving forward."
"I'm excited for our young guys and know that they will build off of this and continue to improve."
Empey won his first three bouts by two decisions and one medical forfeit, including a win against his teammate Jonah Schmidtke. He fell to Hogan Swenski of Ohio State in the first-place match and ultimately ended up in second place in the freshman/sophomore heavyweight division, scoring a total of 15 team points..
Freshmen Rosenfeld and Coy were extremely impressive in their first-ever collegiate tournament. Rosenfeld finished 5-1 in the tournament, comprised of two major decisions and three decisions. He went on to win the third-place bout over Keegan Nugent of Michigan, totalling 13.5 team points. Coy went 3-2 in the tournament and also had a bye. He won by fall once and decision twice.
The Badgers also had two sixth-place finishers in Schmidkte and Cody Goebel. Schmidtke, a sophomore wrestling unattached, won his first two matches by decision, then fell to fellow badgers Empey and Rosenfeld back-to-back. He finished 2-3 in the tournament, gathering six team points. True freshman lGoebel, wrestling attached, also went 2-3 in his first collegiate tournament.Â
Wisconsin wrestlers Jack Severin (5.5 team points), Aidan Medora, Kevin Meicher, Gavin Model (5.0 team points), freshman Michael Tal-Shahar and Graham Calhoun (1.5 team points) also competed in the tournament. Full results for every wrestler are below.
