
Five Things to Know: Badgers travel to Indiana for NCAA qualifier

Wisconsin competes in NCAA Great Lakes Regional
MADISON, Wis. – The No. 22 Wisconsin women's cross country team travels to Terre Haute, Indiana, this Friday for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional. The Badgers, ranked fifth in the region, are looking to qualify for the NCAA championships on Nov. 19 in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
The women's 6K race takes off at 9 a.m. CT with the men's 10K to follow at 10 a.m. CT.
1. RACING TO QUALIFY: The Badgers are looking to qualify for their 59th NCAA Championship on Friday. The top-two teams in each of the nine regionals receive an automatic bid to the NCAA championship. Regular-season performance and how teams perform within their regional will be the main factors of consideration for the remaining 13 teams to participate in the competition. Wisconsin ranks fifth in the region behind Notre Dame, Toledo, Michigan State, and Michigan, respectively.
2. LAST TIME OUT: Last season, the Badgers showed their dominance at the Great Lakes regionals as they came in second as a team scoring 69 points. Returning for the Badgers in this race is senior Samantha Stieve, the crossed in 20:13.9 for 12th place. Graduate student Lucinda Crouch took 17th in 20:19.6 last year. Senior Victoria Heiligenthal was just a second behind Crouch, placing 18th in 20:20.9. Redshirt junior Shea Ruhly took 32nd in 20:38.9 last season but has shown her dominance this season as she has led Badgers.
3. SCOUTING THE COMPETITION: Wisconsin comes into this weekend ranked fifth in the region, behind Michigan State and Michigan, who the Badgers last competed against at the Big Ten Championships, as the three programs were the top-three finishers at the conference championship. Michigan State scored 78 points, Michigan scored 86 points, and UW rounded it out with 94 points, the Badgers were only separated by 16 points from Michigan State. At the top of the rankings is Notre Dame, who is ranked first in the region and took home second at the ACC Championships, only coming in four points behind top-ranked NC State. Toledo holds the second-place ranking as they won the MAC Championships with 29 points.
4. BIG HONOREES: Ruhly, Stieve, and Crouch earned second-team All-Big Ten at the Big Ten Championships. Redshirt senior Peyton Sippy also received the Big Ten Sportsmanship award for her contributions on and off the course.
