Horbach and Bantle net goals in 4-2 loss
MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin Badgers's men's hockey team fell to No. 5 Michigan in their series finale at the Kohl Center, settling for a series split on Saturday.
The Badgers led twice and the game was tied midway through the third period, but Michigan struck shorthanded and then finished things off with an empty net tally for the 4-2 victory.
Jack Horbach lit the lamp for the Badgers (7-8-0, 1-6-0 0-0-0 Big Ten) six minutes into the first period, triggering the release of a thousand teddy bears from the stands in Wisconsin's fifth annual Teddy Bear Toss presented by BMO. Owen Lindmark started the play when he won an offensive zone face off back to Corson Ceulemans on the point. The defenseman slid the puck across to Horbach, whose wrist shot sailed through a screen and into the net.
Michigan (10-6-1, 2-5 Big Ten) responded 40 seconds later when Luke Hughes set up Rutger McGroarty on a rush into Wisconsin's zone.
Carson Bantle gave Wisconsin a 2-1 lead midway through the second period. Sam Stange took the puck away from a Wolverine and rushed up the ice. Stange sent a pass to Bantle as he entered the offensive zone and the forward fired a shot past goaltender Erik Portillo.
The Wolverines tied the score once more at 11:26 in the second period when Mark Estapa jumped into the play after his penalty expired. Jackson Hallum broke the puck out of Michigan's end. He connected with Estapa as he came into the Badgers' zone and lifted a backhand shot past goaltender Jared Moe.
Michigan took a 3-2 lead at 13:18 in the third period with a short-handed, unassisted goal from Estapa.
McGroarty scored an empty-net goal for a 4-2 final score.
