Badgers edged out by Notre Dame

De St. Phalle records team-leading 10th goal of the season

MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin men's hockey team (9-20-3, 6-15-1 1-2-0 Big Ten) fell short in its comeback bid against No. 11 Notre Dame at the Kohl Center on Sunday.

Notre Dame converted on the power play just nine seconds into the game's first man advantage early in the first period. Jesse Lansdell tapped in a rebound on the edge of the crease, assisted by Spencer Stastney and Chase Blackmun at 2:02.

Hunter Strand doubled Notre Dame's lead at 6:37 in the second period, finishing a play from Justin Janicke and Jack Adams with a wrist shot from the dot.

The Badgers went on the power play late in the second period and were determined to make the most of their man-advantage. Mathieu De St. Phalle caught a pass from Corson Ceulemans and sent a laser into the top corner of the goal. Brock Caufiled recorded the secondary assist and Carson Bantle provided a screen in front of the net.

Notre Dame restored their two-goal lead midway through the final period. Trevor Janicke tipped a shot in the air from Jake Boltman with Jake Pivonka on the secondary assist. After a high-stick review, the goal counted.

Zach Urdahl put the Badgers within one when he tipped a shot from Caden Brown on the edge of the crease. Sam Stange set up Brown, who fired a shot from the point that Urdahl deflected to cut Notre Dame's lead to 3-2.

The Badgers pulled goaltender Jared Moe in favor of an extra skater but were unable to force overtime, falling 3-2 to the Fighting Irish.
