Badgers win seven matches in last road dual of season

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- No. 8 Wisconsin closed its road dual season with a 24-10 victory at No. 17 Northern Iowa on Thursday.

The Badgers won seven of 10 matches against the Panthers, disappointing a large home crowd there to celebrate UNI's senior day and final home dual. The victory improves Wisconsin to 11-2 overall (6-2 Big Ten).

UW lost its opening bout at 133 pounds to give UNI a 3-0 lead, but then the Badgers rallied for wins in the next four matches. True freshman Joseph Zargo earned a second consecutive upset of a higher-ranked opponent after 32nd-ranked Zargo defeated No. 23 Cael Happel in a 9-4 decision at 141 pounds. The win gave Wisconsin three team points to tie up the dual and began the team's rally.

Three Badgers earned major decisions against the Panthers. No. 6 Dean Hamiti added his 16th bonus-point victory to an already impressive 18-1 season with a 10-2 win against No. Austin Yant. Fellow true freshman Braxton Amos, ranked 20th by Intermat at 197 pounds, took down John Gunderson in a 13-4 major decision, while heavyweight and 11th-ranked Trent Hillger shut out Carter Isley 8-0.

Rounding out the wins, No. 6 Austin Gomez defeated Colin Realbuto 9-4 at 149 pounds. Senior Garrett Model strung together a series of takedowns to earn a 14-8 decision against Derek Holschlag at 157 pounds and No. 6 Eric Barnett closed the dual match with a 5-3 decision win over No. 16 Brody Teske.

Full results are below. Wisconsin returns home on Sunday, Feb. 20 to close the dual season with a noon match against No. 11 Cornell streamed live on BTN+. The Badgers will be celebrating Senior Day and fans are encouraged to wear red for a "Red Out."
