No. 8 Badgers close dual season with highly-ranked opponents

MADISON, Wis. — No. 8 Wisconsin (10-2, 6-2 Big Ten) splits its last week of dual-match competition with an away match at No. 17 Northern Iowa (7-6, 6-3 Big 12) on Thursday, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. CT and then returns home for the last dual match of the season against No. 11 Cornell (12-2, 5-0 EIWA) on Sunday, Feb. 20 at the UW Field House in Madison, Wis., at noon CT.

Sunday's home dual will also celebrate Wisconsin's seniors graduating from the UW: Devin Bahr, Anders Lantz, Garrett Model, Andrew McNally, Andrew Salemme and Chris Weiler.

The matches will be both be streamed live. Fans can watch Thursday at UNI on FloWrestling and then Sunday vs. Cornell on BTN+ with Newton Smerchek and Anders Lantz on the call.

Here are five more things to know before the Badgers step on the mats:

1. LAST TIME OUT: Closing out the Big Ten dual season, Wisconsin took down Illinois, 32-10, at the UW Field House on Friday. The Badgers won eight of 10 matches against the Fighting Illini. True freshman Joseph Zargo (141) won an impressive 8-6 decision in OT with an upset of Illinois' No. 4 Dylan Duncan. Austin Gomez pinned Illinois' No. 29 Christian Kanzler in 42 seconds. True freshman Dean Hamiti (165) won an 11-1 major decision over No. 29 Danny Braunagel, improving to 18-1 overall. Read the recap of Wisconsin's win over Illinois here.

2. 10 EARN RANKINGS: All 10 Badgers starters remain ranked nationally by at least one media organization. Three Badgers — Barnett (125, 6th), Gomez (149, 6th) and Hamiti (165, 6th) — are ranked among the top 10 in their weight classes. Six Badgers round out the rest for Intermat: Zargo (141, 32), Model (157, 29), McNally (174, 30), Weiler (184, 27), Braxton Amos (197, 22) and Hillger (285, 11). Kyle Burwick (133) maintains a FloWrestling nod with an Honorable Mention in his weight.

3. SCOUTING THE PANTHERS: Northern Iowa's win streak ended with a narrow 16-15 loss to No. 5 Iowa State on Friday at home in Cedar Falls, the only undefeated team in the Big 12. Northern Iowa won five of 10 matches against the Cyclones, with wins by decision at 125 pounds, 133, 165, 174 and 184. Three of the victories were upsets of higher-ranked Iowa State wrestlers:

  • 125: #18 Brody Teske (UNI) dec. #15 Kysen Terukina (ISU) 6-3;
  • 133: #25 Kyle Biscoglia (UNI) dec. #27 Ramazan Attasauov (ISU) 8-2;
  • 174: Lance Runyon (UNI) dec. #18 Joel Devine (ISU) 1-0.

4. SCOUTING BIG RED: Cornell built a 20-0 lead by halftime and cruised to a 28-12 win over Binghamton on Senior Day on Saturday. The Big Red won its ninth straight dual meet of the season. Seniors Dom LaJoie (133), Mike Venosa (149) and Hunter Richard (157) all earned victories in their final home matches. Cornell's three ranked wrestlers all earned bonus-point victories:

  • 157: #24 Hunter Richard won by technical fall over Tyler Martin (B), 20-4;
  • 184: #13 Jonathan Loew (C) won by major decision over Cory Day (B), 12-3;
  • 197: #19 Jacob Cardenas won by major decision over Sam DePrez (B), 12-4.
