CLEARWATER, Fla. -- The Wisconsin softball team upset the No. 12 Clemson Tigers 2-1 at the ESPN St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational Saturday night in a extra-inning thriller from Eddie C. Moore Complex.
A pitching dual from the start, sophomore
Ava Justman took the circle for the Badgers to start the game against Clemson's Millie Thompson. Justman went 3 2/3 innings only allowing four hits in 17 batters face.
Clemson broke the tie in the fourth inning, scoring one run while capitalizing on a Badger throwing error on a stolen base attempt. Badger senior
Maddie Schwartz would take control in the circle and despite the small deficit, the Badger defense held strong including
Morgan Kummer throwing out a runner at third from left field and catcher
Christaana Angelopulos throwing out a lead runner at second base in the fourth inning.
With Clemson keeping the door shut through the fifth and sixth inning, the Badgers got a spark from Angelopulos in the seventh. As the leadoff hitter, the catcher took a ball to the arm, reaching on a hit by pitch. Instead of going down hurt, she ran down the first base line yelled at the dugout to get loud and get excited.
Peyton Bannon would enter in as a pinch hitter at first with pinch hitter
Megan Donahue taking the plate. Laying down the perfect sacrifice bunt, Donahue advanced Bannon to second.
Now, with only one out in the top of the seventh, nine-hitter
Ally Miklesh took the plate, reaching on a slap hit to second base. The Badgers now had runners at the corners with one out and leadoff batter
Ellie Hubbard coming up to bat. After a stolen base by Miklesh, Bannon scored on a Clemson wild pitch, tying the game at 1-1.
In the bottom of the seventh, Schwartz and the Badgers shut the door on the Tigers offense forcing three straight ground outs on only sis pitched from Schwartz to force extra innings.
Entering into the international tie-breaker rules – meaning each team will start with a runner on second base once the game reaches extra innings –
Molly Schlosser entered as the runner for Wisconsin with senior
Kayla Konwent leading off. The early season batting average leader for the Badgers hit the ball up the middle, scoring Schlosser from second and taking the lead for UW. Continuing to put pressure on the Tigers, a
Fiona Girardot single and a
Jolie Fish walk loaded the bases for the Badgers, but one run was all that would come in to score.
Looking to capture UW's second ranked win of the weekend, Schwartz dominated the eighth inning. One her first batter faced, the pitcher caught a line drive straight back at her and picked off the runner at second for a statement making double play. From there, she made the final out herself as the Clemson batter grounded out to Schwartz in the circle, clinching the win for Wisconsin, 2-1.
