Defenseman to join Badgers from USHL's Madison Capitols
MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin men's hockey team added a fifth signee to its recruiting class for the fall of 2022, defenseman Ben Dexheimer, head coach Tony Granato announced on Wednesday.
The 2002 birth-year defenseman adds to this year's signing class alongside defensemen Boston Buckberger (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) and Tyson Jugnauth (Kelowna, British Columbia), as well as forwards Jack Horbach (Naperville, Illinois) and Charlie Stramel (Rosemount, Minnesota).Â
Ben Dexheimer
Defense, 5-9, 172, R
Edina, Minnesota
Madison Capitols (USHL)
Dexheimer, a native of Edina, Minnesota, skates just down the road from the UW-Madison campus with the Madison Capitols of the USHL. He has four goals and 25 assists for 29 points in 36 games over the course of the 2021-22 season to rank fourth on his team.
A right-handed shot, the 5-9 and 172-pound defenseman skated with the NAHL's Austin Bruins during the 2020-21 season, where he tallied six goals and 23 points in 46 games.
He helped Blake School to the 2020 Minnesota State High School Class AA title game, scoring three goals and seven points in six games during the tournament. He finished that season with nine goals and 23 points in 24 games during the regular season.
Granato on Dexheimer:
"First and foremost, he's a phenomenal kid and has a great family who we can add to the Badger family. He's going to be a 20-year old freshman, so he's experienced. He's grinded it out in the USHL, which is a tough league. He's had a lot of good experience, and he's really gifted offensively. Ben can skate very well, excels on the power play and, with his passing ability from seeing the ice and reading the layers that are in front of him, he'll continue to grow. He's really hungry to be coached and improve and really wants to be pushed. That impresses all of us."
