MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Tyler Wahl made the game clinching layup with 30.5 seconds left to give No. 11 Wisconsin a 51-49 victory over Penn State on Saturday to extend the Badgers' home winning streak in the series to 21 games.
Steven Crowl aided the squad with a team-high 13 points and five assists. Tyler Wahl hit double-figures scoring with 12 points for the ninth time in 11 games. Another bright spot for UW came from freshman Chucky Hepburn, who added 10 points on 4-for-7 from the field.
Wisconsin's defense held the Nittany Lions to just three points in the first 12:57 and forced ten turnovers on the night.
The second half was a different story as Penn State erased a double-digit deficit and took a 35-34 lead on Sam Sessoms' 3-pointer with 9:13 left. After Wahl briefly put UW back ahead, a Sessoms' basket and Greg Lee's 3-pointer gave Penn State their biggest lead of the night, 40-36, with 7:42 to play.
The Badgers responded with 13 straight points to regain the lead, including a pair of 3-pointers from Crowl. The 7-footer finished with a career-high three treys.
But Penn State answered with a surge of its own, setting up Wahl's big play in the final minute.
The Nittany Lions hasn't beaten Wisconsin in Madison since a 78-67 victory on Jan. 26, 1995. Wisconsin owns a 42-11 lead in the series and has won 16 of the last 17 meetings overall.
Next up for the Badgers is a rematch on the road against No. 13 Michigan State on Tuesday.
