Badgers lose to Ohio State

De St. Phalle records three-point weekend

Columbus, Ohio. — The Wisconsin men's hockey team proved unsuccessful in its matchup against No. 8/9 Ohio State on Saturday at Value City arena, where it fell 6-2 to the Buckeyes.

The Badgers (8-19-3, 5-14-1-1 Big Ten) converted on an early power-play opportunity to take a 1-0 lead. Sam Stange deflected the puck in front of the net on a set up from Liam Malmquist and Josh Ess.

Ohio State (21-7-2, 13-5-2 Big Ten) responded at the four-minute mark when Mason Lohrei tapped the puck up to Georgii Merkulov for him to fire a shot from the face-off dot into the back of the Badgers' net.

The Buckeyes took the lead after Eric Cooley buried the puck on a rush at 15:06 in the first period. Jaedon Leslie bumped a pass up to James Marooney who handed the puck off to Cooley as he burst into Wisconsin's zone. He let off a shot from the hash marks that slipped past Cameron Rowe to put Ohio State up 2-1.

Georgii Merkulov netted his second goal of the game midway through the second period on a breakaway. Grant Gabriele fed him a stretch pass to get behind the Wisconsin defensmen and tuck the puck in the net.

Michael Gildon scored next for Ohio State, catching a pass from Jake Wise then leading a two-on-one rush into the Badgers' zone. He waited to line up a shot then picked the top corner.

The Buckeyes climbed to a 5-1 lead after Cole McWard buried the puck, assisted by Ryan O'Connell.

Mathieu De St. Phalle found the back of the net before the second period was over for the Badges. Josh Ess started the play in the defensive zone when he sent a pass in the air down the ice to Brock Caufield as he crossed the Buckeyes' blue line. Caufield made a drop pass to De St. Phalle, who danced his way through Ohio State's defenseman before wrapping around the net and tucking the puck in on his back hand.

The Badgers headed into the third period trailing OSU 5-2.

Ohio State's Lohrei scored just over a minute into the final period to increase his team's lead to 6-2. Jake Wise set him up on the point where he fired a shot through traffic for OSU's sixth goal of the game.

Cameron Rowe made 13 saves in net and Jared Moe made 19. The Badgers posted 28 shots on goal.
