Badgers lose 29-6 on road against Hawkeyes

IOWA CITY, Iowa — No. 9 Wisconsin fell on the road to No. 2 Iowa, 29-6, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The Badgers kept several of the individual bouts close, but only Eric Barnett and Austin Gomez earned victories at the historic wrestling venue.

No. 7 Barnett opened the Big Ten dual with a 4-0 decision over Iowa's Jesse Ybarra at 125 pounds. After a scoreless first period, the UW junior and returning All-American scored a takedown during the second period and escape during the final period with riding time. The victory gave Wisconsin a 3-0 lead in the team points to open the dual match.

Redshirt junior Austin Gomez earned a 3-2 decision against Iowa's Vince Turk at 149 pounds for the Badgers' second victory of the afternoon. Scoreless after the first period, No. 7 Gomez scored an escape and takedown to take a three-point lead before Turk finally scored an escape to make it 3-1 after period two. The Hawkeye scored an escape to start the final period, but Gomez aggressively defended his lead to tick time off the clock and seal the win.

The Badgers' three true freshman earned losses to the Hawkeyes, but notably held their own against older veteran grapplers  a— sure sign of bright futures.

Dean Hamiti, entering the match undefeated at 165 pounds (17-0) and ranked No. 6 in the country by Intermat, suffered a narrow 8-5 loss to fifth-ranked Alex Marinelli, an Iowa senior. The UW true freshman scored three escapes and a reversal against one of Iowa's top wrestlers. Possible rematches at Big Tens and/or NCAAs will be must-watch television.

Classmate Braxton Amos (197, ranked 22nd) lost a narrow 3-1 decision to Iowa's No. 4 Jacob Warner, while Joseph Zargo (141) scored five points in a 13-5 major decision loss to Iowa's second-ranked Jaydin Eierman.

No. 27 Chris Weiler (184) also kept it close, dropping a tight 4-2 decision to 17th-ranked Abe Assad.
