MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin men's tennis team picked up an exciting 4-3 win Sunday against the Drake Bulldogs, improving to 4-0 on the year at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
The Badgers (4-2 overall) were down 1-0 in the match after Drake (0-3) clinched the doubles point. There was a little bit of everything during singles play after what seemed like a daunting task, with four of six Badgers falling behind in their matches.
Lenard Soha and Tim Dzhurinkiy both worked their way up from big deficits in the first set and both walked into the second with 7-5 wins. The pair — Soha at No. 2 singles and Dzhurinkiy at the No. 5 spot — then finished off their foes with matching 6-4 wins in the second set.
On the other hand,
Sebastian Vile and
Robin Parts quickly took their first sets.
Parts was the first to put the Badgers on the board with a 6-4, 6-3 dismantling of Drake's Matija Matic at the No. 3 position for his fourth singles win of the season.
Vile was in the driver's seat at No. 4 singles after taking his first set 6-2, giving the Badgers a leg up in what became the matchup to decide the team score, which was knotted at 3-3. After falling behind to Vile, Drake's Evan Fragistas forced a third set with a 6-1 win in the second. Tied 5-5 in the third, Vile took the next game to push him one away from clinching the match. His teammates than ran in to celebrate after Vile clinched the match with a 7-5 win.
Straight From the Court
Head Coach Danny Westerman: "Fantastic college match. It wasn't looking good for us for a bit there but the boys dug in and it got louder and became more competitive… It was a different group playing six singles today and it shows they get believe in themselves and get it done down a doubles point."
Senior Sebastian Vile: "Fantastic to get the win in the end. It was really good to have the guys out here supporting each other and fighting for every point. That's what got me through in the end. Really happy to close it out."
