Badgers fall on the road at No. 15 Maryland

Schramek leads Wisconsin for second-straight game

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Playing on the road at No. 15 Maryland, the Wisconsin women's basketball team fell to the Terrapins, 70-43, on Wednesday evening.

The Badgers (6-17, 3-10 B1G) struggled with their ball control, turning the ball over a season-high 26 times, allowing Maryland (18-6, 10-3) to score 27 points off giveaways. The Terps had 17 steals as their tough defense caused problems for Wisconsin all night.

"I think some of it was what we did to ourselves," head coach Marisa Moseley said of the turnovers. "I think we were a little rattled; we needed to be more secure with the ball. Maryland turned the pressure up a little bit. Their switching defense makes it challenging that's why they've been one of the better defensive teams this season – not only in the conference but in the country."

The Terrapins also won the rebounding game, 34-22, including 14 offensive rebounds, scoring 19 second-chance points.

Maryland had four players score in double figures as the team shot 47.2% (25-53) from the field, including 42.1% (8-19) from 3-point range. UM's Angel Reese led all scorers with 19 points while Chloe Bibby added 16 points.

Wisconsin shot 34.1% (14-41) from the field, including 35.7% (5-14) from behind the arc. For the second straight game, sophomore Brooke Schramek led the Badgers in scoring, putting up 16 points against Maryland. Grad student Katie Nelson was the only other UW player in double figures, adding 10 points.

The duo helped Wisconsin shoot a perfect 10-10 from the free-throw line with Schramek, hitting a career-best 6-6 while Nelson was 4-4 from the charity stripe.

"When Brooke does well, we generally do well but Maryland is obviously a top-15 team," said Moseley of her sophomore forward. "For her development and for the future, we need for her to keep doing what she's doing."

The Badgers stayed with Maryland through the first 90 seconds of the game, tying the score at 4-4 with 8:29 left in the first quarter. The Terps went on a 5-0 run to lead 9-4 with 5:52 to play but Wisconsin was able to cut into the lead to trail by three, 11-8, with 4:40 remaining. Maryland closed the quarter on an 11-0 to lead 22-8 after the first period as UW would not get closer the rest of the game.

Wisconsin improved in the second half. After getting outscored by at least five points in the first three quarters, the Badgers were edged by Maryland 14-13 in the fourth period.

"We still have a lot of growth but we showed some signs of better execution the second half," said Moseley.
