Sunday Sweep: UW takes down Southern Utah and Dixie State

Badgers wrap up Dixie State Classic with 4-1 record

ST. GEORGE, UTAH – The Wisconsin softball team ended its time at the Dixie State Classic with a pair of wins on Sunday defeating New Mexico 6-3 before rallying to beat the host Trailblazers, 12-7, in the final game of the tournament.

The Badgers (12-7) wrapped up their weekend in St. George with a 4-1 record and outscored their opponents 34-17 during the five-game tournament.

UW started the day with a 6-3 win over New Mexico as Kayla Konwent, Fiona Girardot and Molly Schlosser all had multi-hit games for the Cardinal and White.

Konwent got things going in the first, doubling to right field before Eden Dempsey, who pitch ran for Konwent, scored later in the inning on an Ellie Hubbard single.

UW tacked on runs in the second and third innings as Ally Miklesh touched home in the second before Peyton Bannon scored in the third thanks to a Jolie Fish double.

New Mexico tied it up in the bottom of the third, but the game wasn't tied for long as Girardot and Hubbard both scored on a Bannon single in the top of the fourth to give UW a 5-3 lead.

Konwent put the exclamation point on the win with a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning to put the game out of reach.

Maddie Schwartz went the distance for UW, allowing three runs while striking out eight Lobos.

In the night cap against the Trailblazers, Hubbard, Lauren Foster, Girardot and Molly Schlosser all recorded multi-hit efforts while 11 different Badgers recorded a run.

UW went down 2-0 early on before Girardot and Dempsey both scored on a Dixie State error to tie the game at 2-2 after the first inning.

Dixie State went on to score two runs in the second and fourth innings to take a 6-2 lead.

The Badgers' rally started in the bottom of the fourth as Molly Schlosser scored on a sac fly by Morgan Kummer before Hubbard's double scored Miklesh to cut the Trailblazer lead to two.

The Badgers offense exploded in the bottom of the fifth, scoring eight runs to take a commanding six-run lead. Megan Donahue and Brooke Kuffel both recorded their first home runs of the year to put the game out of reach.

Dixie State tacked on another run in the top of the seventh but UW held on to improve to 12-7 on the season.

Up Next: UW heads to Salt Lake City, Utah, for a three-game set against the Utes on Tuesday and Wednesday.
