Wisconsin to play at Dixie State Tournament and series with Utah while out west
MADISON, Wis. – Wrapping up its spring non-conference season, the Wisconsin softball team will take a spring break trip to Utah to compete in the Dixie State Tournament March 11-13 and then play a three-game series against Utah in Salt Lake City March 15-16. Here are five things to know before tuning in.
1. RECAPPING THE ROCKIES: Last weekend, the Badgers made a trip out to the Rocky Mountains to take on Colorado State and Northern Colorado, with plans to face Saint Mary's and Utah Valley as well. Wisconsin defeated both host schools in Colorado State and Northern Colorado, but got snowed out as a harsh weather system moved into the Rockies Saturday and Sunday. The Badgers beat the Rams 7-3 while outwitting the Bears 5-4 in nine innings. Both Ellie Hubbard and Morgan Kummer had a great day in the mountains going 3-5 on the day including all of Hubbard's hits being doubles and Kummer going 3-3 against Northern Colorado.
2. SENIOR CAMPAIGN: Senior Ally Miklesh has been one of the most consistent producers for the Badgers so far this season. The Wisconsin native leads the Badgers in both batting average (.367) and on-base percentage (.500) while started all 14 games so far this season. These numbers don't come as a surprise for the veteran centerfielder. Since the day she stepped on campus, Miklesh has been a difference maker to Wisconsin softball. Starting in every game she has ever played, she has only not been the lineup for the Badgers in three games her entire career. It's safe to say Miklesh in on track to put up a huge senior campaign for the Badgers.
3. SCOUTING THE DIXIE STATE TOURNEMENT: Wisconsin will be in St. George Utah from March 11-13 to face off against four different teams including tournament host Dixie State. The Badgers will also play against Maine, Southern Utah and New Mexico, seeing the Lobos twice. New Mexico stands as one of Wisconsin's biggest competition this weekend holding a 15-3 record with two out of its three losses coming to top ten teams. Wisconsin will play Maine Friday at 11 a.m., a doubleheader against New Mexico and Southern Utah Saturday at 11 a.m. and will round out the tournament against New Mexico and Dixie State Sunday at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. respectively.
4. SCOUTING UTAH: After taking Monday off to travel over to Salt Lake City, Utah, Wisconsin will be back in action against the Utes in its first series of the season. At a 15-6 record, Utah has seen four weekends of softball so far this season, including attending the elite Mary Nutter Classic the final week of February, and will play one more double header before facing the Badgers next week. Four of Utah's six losses have come to ranked teams, with the Utes only losing by one run to both No. 5 Oklahoma State and No. 1 Oklahoma.
5. UP NEXT: After finishing up in Utah, Wisconsin will take a weekend off before returning to Madison to kickoff conference play. The Badgers will travel to Iowa March 25-27 before hosting their home opener at Goodman Diamond against Indiana April 1-3.
