DETROIT — Wisconsin wrestling's three 2022 NCAA All-Americans closed out their competitive seasons on Saturday morning with podium finishes at the NCAA Championships. Austin Gomez (149 pounds) led the Badgers with a fourth-place finish, while teammate Dean Hamiti (165) finished sixth and Eric Barnett (125) placed seventh.
Wisconsin scored 38.5 points to climb to 14th place and was tied with Oklahoma State in the final team standings. Penn State (131.5 points) won the NCAA team title, while Michigan (95.0), Iowa (74.0), Arizona State (66.5) and Nebraska (59.5) rounded out the top five clearly demonstrating the Big Ten's wrestling dominance in the national scene.
Barnett, a junior, had been bounced out of the championship bracket by Brandon Kaylor (Oregon State) earlier in the tournament. But Barnett achieved the ultimate redemption on Saturday morning by pinning Kaylor in 4:44 to win the seventh-place match. Barnett also bettered his 2021 performance (eighth place in his first NCAA qualification). Barnett finished 5-2 overall at NCAAs, earned his second career All-America honor and ends his 2021-22 campaign with a 21-5 record. The victory over Kaylor also marks his fifth pin of the season.
Gomez, the 2022 Big Ten Champion, opened up his final day of NCAA competition confirming why he was the conference titlist at 149 with a 6-5 decision over Sammy Sasso (Ohio State), his second victory over Sasso in the last two weeks after defeating him for the league crown. Gomez scored two key takedowns during the second period of his bout against Sasso to secure the lead in a closely-contested battle.Â
In the NCAA third-place match, Gomez sought redemption against Virginia Tech's Bryce Andonian, who had defeated him earlier in the tournament and sent him into the consolation bracket. Behind from the start, Gomez pulled within one point to a 7-6 score before his opponent scored an escape and a takedown in the closing seconds to secure the win, 10-6. Earning his first career NCAA All-American honor, Gomez placed fourth overall with a 5-2 record and improves to 23-4 this season, his first as a Badger.
Rounding out Wisconsin's class of three All-Americans, true freshman Dean Hamiti finished sixth overall in the country. Hamiti lost a narrow 7-5 decision on Saturday morning to Michigan's Cameron Amine to advance to the fifth-place match. However Hamiti opted to medically forfeit his final match against Iowa's Alex Marinelli due to injury.
Hamiti, considered one of the country's most dominant wrestlers and the 2022 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, finished his national tournament with a 4-2 overall record (medical forfeits do not count as losses officially) and improved to 28-4 overall in his first year as a Badger.
