Head coach Chris Clark on the varsity eight race
"In the first eight, Stanford jumped us a little at the start. We moved out at some point in the second 500 of the race by a couple seats. This the type of race in California, if we don't keep pulling away, we often lose only because what we are missing by not rowing a lot is often the second half of the race. It is not difficult to go pretty well for the first half.
"At some point Stanford went ahead in the third 500 and we closed very hard but it ended up being by a deck at the finish.
"Excellent performance with our guys. So often we follow this pattern out here. The first race, they're excited, they're fresh and they get it done. The second race they're more tired and going against Cal is usually the order and often they do worse than they should have. Then the third race, now they will have raced three times in 24 hours and they get it together. Sure enough, exact same pattern again.
"Cal is the only outlier here. The times on Sunday indicate we're all close. We rowed 5:41, Stanford raced 5:41 and Washington raced to 5:38. I would say Cal is that much better. The others were in the 5:40s above us. Every boat in that mix is somewhat similar."
"I'm very pleased since we only got on Mendota this past Monday. A lot of raw talent in the boat. Combine that with some veteran leadership in the middle of the boat and Jimmy Catalano, who is a superb coxswain."
On the second varsity eight race
"I thought the 2V did great. Stanford had some serious steering issues that did not help them, but our 2V was on a mission and we took that one pretty easily. I was really happy for then.
Jonah Rane, the coxswain, who in any other program would be the first eight coxswain."
On the third varsity eight
"In the third eight,
Grayson VanLue did an excellent job at coxswain as well. In some years we'd get completely smacked. They were 10 seconds faster than us, but we didn't make it easy on Washington. They rowed many strokes higher than us, we're just incapable of that right now."
