Badgers get back to Goodman Diamond to face the Spartans
MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin softball team returns home this weekend for its second home stand of the season to face off against Michigan State Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Goodman Diamond. Here are five things to know before tuning in:
1. DON'T CALL IT A COMEBACK: Going 6-7 from the plate during the Badger's most recent series against Illinois, Kayla Konwent continues to dominate Big Ten pitching in her comeback season. The senior is batting .419 on the year with a .569 on base percentage, both lead the team. Her batting average sits seventh in the Big Ten and her OBP is good for second in the conference.
2. AREA RED: While the Wisconsin student section made appearances at Wisconsin's home opening series against Indiana two weeks ago, the official launch of the Wisconsin Softball student section will take place this weekend. UW students will receive discounted tickets, available at the gate for just $2 or free with a Red Card, as well as enjoy a free t-shirt giveaway on Saturday's game.
3. SCHWARTZ'S STAMINA: In last weekend's series versus Illinois, senior pitcher Maddie Schwartz surpassed 100 innings pitched for the Badgers during her senior campaign. This number didn't come as a surprise to Wisconsin's go-to arm in the circle as Schwartz is used to taking a heavy innings load. Last season, Schwartz led the team in innings pitched with 156.2, good for fourth in the Big Ten. This season, Maddie sits with a 15-5 record, 2.64 ERA and 73 strikeouts, on track to have very similar numbers of success as last season.
4. SCOUTING MICHIGAN STATE: The Spartans currently sit last in the Big Ten at a 20-20 overall record and 1-9 record in conference play. They also rank 13th in overall team batting average, but second in team ERA. Similar to the Badgers, MSU started off the season facing some tough opponents in Leesburg, Florida. While their conference record looks to be in favor of Wisconsin, the Spartans are not a team to be taken lightly as nearly all of their conference games so far have come against the Big Ten's best ball clubs this season including Nebraska and Northwestern.
5. THIS WEEKEND AT GOODMAN: Wisconsin's second home series is set to kick-off Friday night at 3 p.m. with all fans receiving a pink softball while supplies last. The series continues Saturday and Sunday with both games starting at 1 p.m. Children ages 12 and under can participate in an Easter egg hunt in the outfield after the game Sunday. All three games will be available to stream on Big Ten Network+ with live updates, photos and videos available by following @BadgerSoftball on Twitter.
