Men's Head Coach Chris Clark

On the course and the surprise
"We rowed on the Ohio River and it was mild and calm. I would say the only thing of interest was in the first race, the varsity race, there was a steamboat for viewing and this boat I don't think followed its instructions. It created a wake that on a river that has current can act very different than it acts on the lake. It sticks around as giant rollers so our eights were going along quite well and then 'bam' when we hit those rolls the guys couldn't believe it. They didn't know it was coming and a couple of them thought the boat was going to swamp and I thought the boat might break in half to be honest with you. It went from being a terrific, very quick clean first 1500 to a little bit of survival. At no point life and limb was risked. It's the kind of thing that they laugh about. In the other two races, there was perfectly flat water."

On the opponent
"The Marietta coach Greg Meyer, who was a Wisconsin grad in the Class of 1992, has got an excellent program here and I would expect in a couple of years to be very strong. It is a beautiful town and a great rowing set up and and the last two years we have started the season here."

On next weekend
"Next week we move on to California on Saturday and Sunday to race Oregon State, Cal and Stanford. I'm glad we got this race under our belt.

"We're not on Lake Mendota yet. The docks should go in on Monday so we haven't taken a stroke on our own lake since November so we need all the work we can get."
