Badgers come out victorious in varsity four and double sculls
REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – No. 6 Wisconsin won a pair of races at No. 2 Stanford Saturday morning.
Â
The double sculls finished in 8:11.00. The race started in the Cardinal's favor over the first 500 meters, but at the halfway point they took the lead and kept growing the gap and won the competition by 16 seconds.
Â
"These two athletes had three practices together prior to racing," said lightweights lead coach Hadzo "Hodge" Habibovic. "They were down close to a length off the start and stayed composed throughout the first thousand meters."
Â
The varsity four boat had a successful day on the water. They crossed the mark in 7:32.00 – an impressive 33 seconds ahead of Stanford.
Â
"The varsity four had a lead immediately and never looked back," said Hodge. "The coxswain, Claire Willett, really steered a great course which was great to see from the halfway bridge."
Â
To round out the day's races, the varsity eight finished seven seconds behind the Cardinal. The boat's time was 6:57.3.
Â
Next up for UW is the Eastern Sprints in Worcester, Massachusetts, on Sunday, May 1.
