UNIVERSITY PARK, PA – The senior duo of
Maddie Schwartz and
Morgan Kummer led the Wisconsin softball team to a 1-0, 10-inning win on Friday night at Nittany Lion Softball Park.
Schwartz went the distance for the Badgers (26-12, 11-5)), throwing a one-hitter while setting the school record for the most conference wins in a season with 11. A native of Chanhassen, Minnesota, Schwartz picked up eight strikeouts en route to her 21st overall win of the season, which ranks sixth in school history. Schwartz had a no-hitter going through eight innings when Penn State's catcher hit one up the middle to extend the ninth inning. Schwartz shut the door quickly before the home team could gain any momentum.
After nine scoreless innings against the Nittany Lions (28-18, 10-8), Kummer broke the deadlock in the top of the 10th inning with a home run to deep center field to give UW a 1-0 lead it wouldn't relinquish. Kummer's fifth career home run and her first of the season couldn't have come at a better time for the Badgers.

Straight From the Diamond
Head Coach Yvette Healy
On Maddie Schwartz:
"Maddie was lights out. She was really just determined. You just see our seniors just kicking it up a level and she loves her team and I think it shows."
On Morgan Kummer:
"I think it takes a special kid to not be an every day starter and to just keep fighting for it all year. Morgan has been fighting for it and doing great things."
Senior Pitcher Maddie Schwartz
On the win:
"I think those games don't happen without our defense and we had it on lock the entire time. Our left side is so strong, with Lauren being so mature and its easy for errors to happen or things to get through but i think we showed a lot of maturity without defense."
