Distance medley relay sets school record

MADISON, Wis. —- The Wisconsin men's track and field team finished its weekend of challenge, competing at the Penn Relays, Drake Relays, and UW-Whitewater Drake Alternative.

The Badgers set a school record in the distance medley relay at the Penn Relays and won one event at the Drake Relays and Whitewater meet.

School record in the DMR

The quartet of Adam Spencer (2:54.5 for 1200 meters), Colin Enz (46.4 for 400 meters), Abdullahi Hassan (1:49.6 for 800 meters) and Olin Hacker (3:59.5 for 1600 meters) set a school record in the Championship of America Distance Medley Relay at the Penn Relays on Friday. The Badgers crossed the line in 9:29.79, just 0.34 seconds out of first place, breaking the previous mark of 9:32.84 set by Ryan Gasper, James Groce, Zach Beth, and Craig Miller in 2010.

On Saturday, Spencer, Hacker, Jackson Sharp and Jack Meijer placed 10th in the Championship of American 4x-Mile Relay in 16:27.98.

Johnson wins 100 at Drake Relays

Junior Lawrence Johnson won the 100 meters at the Drake Relays on Saturday, crossing the line in 10.56.

Wisconsin also competed in two relays as Charlie Wheeler, Elliott Harris, Ansel Fellman, and Rowen Ellenberg finished 10th in the distance medley relay in 9:55.67.

In the 4x1600-meter relay, Ellenberg, Bob Liking, Shuaib Aljabaly and Evan Bishop placed fourth in 16:41.22.

Hooper with the Hammer

Wisconsin claimed four of the top-five spots in the hammer throw at the UW-Whitewater Drake Alternative meet on Friday.

Redshirt sophomore Cole Hooper won the hammer with a toss of 199 feet, 1 inch, Redshirt senior Dan Ufearo finished second at 193-2 while graduate transfer Sam Coil finished third with a throw of 187-11. Redshirt freshman Jason Swarens finished fifth in the hammer at 186-11 and also took fifth in the discus at 157-0.

Wisconsin hosts the Badger Invitational at the McClimon track complex on Friday, the final event prior to the Big Ten Outdoor Championships. Field events begin at noon with running events starting at 2 p.m. The Badgers will recognize their graduating seniors at the meet.
