UW faces their toughest Big Ten opponent yet as they search for another series win
MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin softball team will take its second trip of the Big Ten Conference season when it heads to Champaign, Illinois, to take on Illinois this weekend. UW and Illinois were originally scheduled to open their series on Friday at 5 p.m., but instead will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Eichelberger Field. The two teams will wrap up their series on Sunday at noon.
1. LAST TIME OUT: UW is coming off of a series win against Indiana, taking two of three games against the Hoosiers. The Badgers earned a 7-5 win during game one on Friday before falling 7-4 in the second game of the doubleheader. UW took the rubber match on Sunday thanks to a 6-2 triumph that featured two home runs from Chris Angelopolus and another dinger from Kayla Konwent. Senior pitcher Maddie Schwartz threw 16.2 innings over the three games with a 4.20 ERA on the weekend.
2. WARMING UP: Since the start of March, the Badgers are 14-2 and have outscored their opponents 114-52. During that span Ally Miklesh is hitting .442 while Konwent is hitting .404 as both players have 19 hits during that span. Schwartz also has an 11-1 record since the start of March with a 1.98 ERA and seven complete games.
3. IN THE STANDINGS: Wisconsin currently sits tied for second in the Big Ten at a 5-1 record. Nebraska remains the only team in the Big Ten that is undefeated at 5-0 while UW is tied with Northwestern and Maryland in the No. 2 spot. In national polls, the Badgers enter this weekend with an RPI ranking of No. 23, which is the third-best ranking in the Big Ten Conference. UW also is ranked No. 20 in the Extra Inning Softball Top-25 Poll while UW is receiving votes in both the NFCA/USA Today Top-25 Poll and the ESPN.Com/USA Softball Top-25 Poll.
4. AGAINST ILLINOIS: The Badgers trail Illinois all time in the matchup with U of I leading 29-21. On the road, the series is tied 11-11 as the Badgers look to take control of that record. Over the last ten matchups, the series is also tied 5-5. A competitive series throughout the rivalry is set to bring another fun weekend of Big Ten softball.
5. WINNING WAYS: Wisconsin enters this weekend's series with a 13-0 record when it scores six or more runs in a game. The Badgers also boast a 12-2 record when they score a run in the first inning. Keeping the offense rolling while Schwartz and the Badger pitching staff put up challenging at-bats for the Illini hitters will be key to another Big Ten series win.
