Current Badger and Asst. Coach look to qualify for U.S. World Team
MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin sophomore Braxton Amos and Badgers assistant coach Seth Gross are competing in the 2022 World Team Trials Challenge Tournament this Saturday and Sunday in Coralville, Iowa.
The USA Wrestling event will be held at XTream Arena and showcases Olympic hopefuls competing for the Final X and eventually the 2022 U.S. Senior World Team that will compete in Belgrade, Serbia, September 12-18.
Amos is seeded No. 2 at 97 kilograms in the men's Greco-Roman tournament. He is the reigning Junior World Champion in the same weight class in Greco-Roman and qualified for his first NCAA Championships in March as a Wisconsin freshman at 197 pounds. This is the only weight class (97 KG) in the Greco-Roman tournament that will be wrestled all the way through to determine who will meet World bronze medalist G'Angelo Hancock, at Final X New York on June 8. The WTT winner will be determined with a best two-of-three championship series. Read the USA Wrestling preview here.
Gross, a former NCAA Champion and All-American, is seeded No. 5 at 61 kilograms in the men's freestyle tournament. He recently won the 65 KG title at the Bill Farrell Memorial International Tournament, April 1-2, with a 12-5 victory over Ian Parker (Cyclone RTC). Former Badger Tyler Graff is also participating in the same weightclass as Gross and is seeded third. Gross will need to win the tournament to advance to Final X Stillwater on June 3 against Daton Fix. The WTT winner will be determined with a best two-of-three championship series. Both Amos and Gross participated in the 2021 U.S. Olympic Trials, falling just short of Olympic qualification. Amos was a 2021 alternate for the U.S. Olympic Team in Greco-Roman for the Tokyo games.
The WTT Challenge Tournament will be streamed live on FloWrestling and results will be available in the FloWrestling arena. Subscription is required.
