Wisconsin takes five of six singles matches to open the spring
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Wisconsin women's tennis team opened the 2023 spring season in impressive fashion Thursday with a convincing 6-1 win at I-94 rival Marquette. The Badgers took two of three doubles matches before rolling to wins in five of the six singles matches. With the win, Wisconsin extended its winning streak against Marquette to seven straight wins in the series.

The duo of Maria Sholokhova and Ava Markham won their doubles match, 7-5, against Elisabeth Desmarais and Emilia Kojcic, while Taylor Cataldi and Charmaine Seah beat out Elizabeth Ferdman and Emma Davis by a score of 6-2.

On the singles side, Ava Markham, Sholokhova, Cataldi, Xinyu Cai and Seah all won their respective matches. No. 82 ranked Markham kept her undefeated singles record in her 6-2, 6-2 win on Thursday, giving her a singles record of 4-0 this spring.

"We always appreciate the opportunity to compete against Marquette," said head coach Kelcy McKenna. "Our team pushed through some tough moments in doubles and found a way. Taylor Russo and I are really proud of the team's resiliency today given the difficult conditions."

Up next, Wisconsin travels to Auburn, Ala. on Saturday, Jan. 21 for a road doubleheader. Starting at noon (CT) the Badgers face No. 2 North Carolina followed by Samford at 4 p.m. (CT).
