Laatsch, De St. Phalle net a goal and assist
SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The Wisconsin men's hockey team was unable to overcome one two-goal deficit, but failed the second time against Notre Dame to fall 5-3 on Friday at Compton Family Ice Arena.
The Badgers and Notre Dame skated through a five-goal first period. Wisconsin fell behind 2-0 before evening the score, but Notre Dame regained the lead before the period was over.
The Fighting Irish netted the opening goal of the series on the power play at 6:10 in the first period. Ryder Rolston and Landon Slaggert set up Chayse Primeau for a tap-in goal on the doorstep.
Notre Dame added to their lead a minute later when Grant Silianoff picked up a rebound from Jake Boltman's slap shot and found Hunter Strand with a behind-the-back pass. Strand's initial shot was denied but he buried the rebound past goaltender Jared Moe.
Jack Horbach got the Badgers on the board at 9:51 in the first period for his fourth goal of the season. Luke LaMaster took a shot from the blue line that ricocheted along the blue line to Daniel Laatsch on the boards. He skated deep into the zone and passed to Jack Horbach behind the goal line who walked out in front of the net and snuck one past goaltender Ryan Bischel on the short side.
Laatsch tied the score for Wisconsin, 2-2, a little over two minutes later. Mathieu De St. Phalle chased the puck into the offensive zone and won a puck battle behind Notre Dame's net. He fed a pass to Charlie Stramel on the goal line, who connected with Laatsch as he crashed the net. The sophomore defenseman got the shot on net, but was deflected through traffic and past Bischel for the equalizer.
The Fighting Irish regained the lead before the first period ended after Jesse Lansdell scored on the power play with less than three minutes remaining. Drew Bavaro fired a shot from the point that created a rebound for Trevor Janicke, but his shot was blocked by LaMaster. Lansdell scooped up the loose puck and lifted it into the net after two more tries to give his squad a 3-2 lead heading into the second period.
Jack Adams restored Notre Dame's two-goal lead at the end of the second period in a tic-tac-toe play with Nick Leivermann and Chase Blackmun. Blackmun pulled the puck off the boards at the blue line and threaded a cross-zone pass to Leivermann, who found Adams all alone on the right side of the net for a tap-in goal.
The Badgers skated into the third period trailing, 4-2.
Justin Janicke added to Notre Dame's lead at 2:19 in the final frame when he buried a rebound from Primeau and Rolston.
Wisconsin then capitalized on a power-play advantage to cut the deficit to 5-3 at 4:24 in the third period. Cruz Lucius quarterbacked the play on the blue line in Notre Dame's zone. He dropped a pass for Corson Ceulemans who threaded a pass through traffic to De St. Phalle as he came down the far side for a one-timer that sailed past Bischel.
Wisconsin pulled goaltender Moe in favor of an extra skater with 2:40 remaining but was unable to make up the deficit, falling 5-3 to Notre Dame.
