Badgers lead Michigan and Arizona after day one

Wisconsin wins six events against Wolverines and Wildcats
MADISON, Wis. – After the first 11 events, the 22nd-ranked Wisconsin men's swimming and diving team leads Michigan and Arizona in a triangular meet held at Soderholm Family Aquatic Center on Friday. The Badgers lead Michigan 115-90 and Arizona 139-54.

Junior Yigit Aslan led a 1-2-3 finish in the 1000 free, touching the wall in 9:12.96. Senior Jude Williams finished second in 9:17.36 and sophomore Zach Ward took third in 9:18.91.

Senior Jake Newmark claimed first in the 200 backstroke in 1:45.20. He also finished second in the 200 free in 1:36.92 as the Badgers claimed three of the top-four places. Freshman Luukas Vainio finished third in 1:37.98 and junior Chris Morris placed fourth in 1:38.99.

Senior Daniel Muller claimed a pair of top-two places in the diving. The senior won the 3-meter board with 351.68 points and took second on the 1-meter board with 331.95 points. Sophomore Jan Lanser earned a pair of third-place finishes, scoring 292.88 points on the 3-meter and 280.95 points on the 1-meter.

Benson was also the top UW finisher in the 100 butterfly, claiming third in 57.94.

The Badgers also finished third in the 400 medley relay with the team of Newmark, Torok, Segal and Vainio combining to finish in 3:13.62.

Torok leads the way
Wisconsin won six events behind double-event winner Dominik Mark Torok. The reigning Big Ten Swimmer of the Week claimed first in the 200 breaststroke in 1 minutes, 57.98 second and touched first in the 400 individual medley in 3:50.56. In the breaststroke, junior Matthew Segal finished fourth in 2:03.02 while in the IM, sophomore Zach Ward took third in 3:57.49.Other event winners
The Badgers won three other individual events.Â

Other top finishers
Wisconsin claimed three of the top-four places in the 50 freestyle. Sophomore Taiko Torepe-Ormsby and sophomore Ben Wiegand both broke the 20-second barrier, finishing second and third, respectively, in 19.83 and 19.88. Â Senior Andrew Benson touched in 20.17 for fourth place.Â
Benson was also the top UW finisher in the 100 butterfly, claiming third in 57.94.
Relays score well
Wisconsin capped off the day with a win in the 200 free relay. The team of Newmark, Torepe-Ormsby, Wiegand and Benson outraced a tough Michigan team by less than half a second to set a pool record in 1:19.23.Â
The Badgers also finished third in the 400 medley relay with the team of Newmark, Torok, Segal and Vainio combining to finish in 3:13.62.
