Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

No. 1 Badgers down No. 11 Huskies, 4-2

Simms scores twice to extend UW’s unbeaten start to the season

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The top-ranked Wisconsin women's hockey team earned its first ranked win of the season, taking down No. 11 St. Cloud State, 4-2, on Friday afternoon at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.

Kirsten Simms scored twice for the Badgers (11-0-0, 7-0-0-0 WCHA) while Britta Curl and Ava Murphy also added goals against the Huskies (9-3-0, 4-2-0-0 WCHA).

After going down midway in the first period, the Badgers scored a pair of power-play goals less than 80 seconds apart to take a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.

Simms found the back of the net for her 12th goal of the season before Curl scored her 11th of the season from a tough angle just over a minute later. It marked the 10th-straight game Curl has tallied a goal in, breaking the previous school record of nine set by Badger legend Meghan Duggan.

The Huskies tied the game up with 13 minutes remaining in the second period on a reviewed goal, but the Badgers retook the lead less than a minute later thanks to a laser by Simms.

Murphy joined in on the scoring, launching a rocket from long range with just over five minutes left in the second period that gave UW a 4-2 advantage after 40 minutes .

SCSU outshot the Badgers 9-7 in the third, but Wisconsin was able to stymie the Huskies and hold on to the 4-2 win.

Three Notes To Know
  • Wisconsin's power play went 2 for 3 on the day and UW's 18 power-play goals pace the country.
  • Curl has also recorded a point in every game this season as her 11-game point streak is tied for the 10th-longest in school history.
  • UW's 11-0-0 start is the fourth-best start to a season in program history.

Sophomore Kirsten Simms
On her strong start:
"I think going in with confidence, it being my second year just being comfortable with the game and trusting my own game now, as well as who I'm playing with. I'm obviously comfortable playing with them as well. Puck movement is working and just getting more shots on that."

Senior Britta Curl
On the win:

"I think it was our biggest test that we've had this year. They are a really solid team, and I think we came out with a good start and got goals when we needed to and then just shut them out at the end."

On breaking Meghan Duggan's goal streak record:
"That's someone I've tried to emulate. I know she's a solid player but an even better person and it's pretty special to be named next to her and I hope that I can continue the legacy that she started."

Up Next: UW and SCSU wrap up their series on Saturday with a 1 p.m. contest at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Fans can watch the game on TVW in the Madison area or listen to the action on 1070 AM.
